Leaning into the Future

Building Beyond the Post-COVID-19 New Normal

VINCENT F. COTTER

“Leaning into the Future successful flips the narrative from one of reaction to proactivity. Understanding how to resolve complex issues without internal chaos is an art. We often only get one opportunity to “get it right.” Leaning into the Future provides all leaders with that opportunity.”— Francis Barnes, former PA Secretary of Education, former Superintendent of Schools

“The concept of “leaning forward” is an established action in a number of fields: athletics, leadership, military, etc. Dr. Cotter takes the notion of “leaning forward” and focuses “laser like” upon current educational issues facing our community schools. The concepts and processes presented serve as a gateway for the coordinated efforts for all who have a vested interest in enhancing school and school district achievement.”— Harry J. Gaffney, former Regional Superintendent, School District of Philadelphia, Adjunct Professor, Saint Joseph’s University

“Now is the time to respond to the learning crisis proactively and with purpose. Cotter’s book provides a strategic guide for educational leaders to “lean forward” and address the current learning crisis in a transformational manner. Cotter outlines the need for “synertegic” leaders to commit, respond, and reinvent our schools utilizing a continuous improvement model. This book is essential reading for educators preparing to move their schools and districts “Above and Beyond.”— Michael McKenna, Director of Elementary Education, North Penn School District

In returning to the classroom, schools are at a crossroads and uniquely positioned to recreate and reinvent themselves. The current issues of equity, social-emotional sensitivity, curriculum reform, civic involvement, public health policy and environmental infrastructure are opportunities to build more responsive schools with students better prepared for the future.

Vincent F. Cotter, as superintendent of schools, was the primary innovator of a unique school improvement program that dramatically improved student achievement, and for his efforts, he was awarded the prestigious American Society for Quality’s International Juran Medal in the field of education for sustained systemic improvement.

Igniting School Performance

A Pathway from Academic Paralysis to Excellence

VINCENT F. COTTER

“There are no excuses. The wealthiest, most powerful democracy in the world can fix our underperforming educational system. Dr. Cotter has documented the roadmap to improve outcomes and graduate our children with the necessary skills for both personal success and for the success of our country. These outcomes are possible despite the disparity of social and economic conditions. “Igniting School Performance” is a must-read for School Board members, Educational Administrators, Teachers and Parents with school-age children.” — Thomas J. Marchozzi, former Colonial School Board Member, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, Lehigh Valley Health Network

“There is a great deal of talk in the field of education regarding school performance initiatives. Dr. Vincent Cotter provides educational leaders with a framework of how to expect nothing less than excellence from yourself, those that you lead, and the community within which you work when it comes to improving school performance. His second book, Igniting School Performance, is required reading for future Superintendents, principals and school leaders who are looking for a systemic improvement approach and the “will” to succeed.” — Joseph A. Carracappa, Principal, Upper Moreland High School

“Continuing to improve a school or district is essential in order for students to enter a highly competitive society. Igniting School Performance provides practical strategies to engage stakeholders in the critical planning process to improve learning for all students. The “Five Guiding Principles” outlined in the book provide an excellent framework to get the systemic performance results needed in our schools.” — Darlene Davis, former Superintendent of Schools, Cheltenham Township School District

“Igniting School Performance” begins with a simple question. What kind of school do you want for the children in your neighborhood, town, city or county? While the question is a good starting point, other questions such as: Are you willing to make a commitment so that all schools are high performing? How do you define high performing? and How might that goal be accomplished? are equally important. From the outset of this text, there is a focus on involving all stakeholders in the process of improving student achievement and providing an inclusive leadership approach that breaks the internal paralysis or ineptness which contributes to the ongoing status quo of underachievement in far too many schools. Stakeholders such as board members might declare that they are interested in schools that serve their community. Superintendents might focus on schools that create individuals with the desire to be life-long learners. Teachers might indicate that schools are a place where children learn. Parents may simply express that they want the schools to be good. Further qualifying each of these responses may also yield descriptions of schools that are very different from those previously described.

Dr. Vincent Cotter, as superintendent of schools, was the primary innovator of a unique school improvement program which dramatically improved student achievement and for his efforts was awarded the prestigious American Society for Quality’s international Juran Medal (2011) in the field of education for sustained systemic improvement.

Performance is Key

Performance is Key – Connecting the links to Leadership and Excellence will be released January 2018.  The essential book on leadership and performance from veteran educators, Dr. Vincent Cotter and Dr. Robert Hassler.

Performance is Key “opens the door” to Connecting the Links to Leadership and Excellence by providing the essential elements necessary to reach higher performance levels but is also diagnostic and prescriptive in identifying the disconnections that impede higher performance and provides practical solutions through a framework for improvement along with associated success strategies. Practitioners and aspiring leaders will appreciate not only the rationale for immediate action but the systemic approach to excellence. Performance is Key also recognizes that real sustainable solutions are internally developed in a collaborative manner and that all schools and districts have the capacity to improve performance outcomes. This book will demonstrate the importance of utilizing the four essential elements in a coordinated and collaborative manner and how leaders can execute implementation plans which incorporate those elements in a synergistic way that will lead to high performance. In an effort to make improved performance a reality, professional development activities are provided in the form of worksheets and leadership exercises to build a culture of continuous improvement and a belief that each and every school has the internal capacity to reach excellence.
